Dr Ranj Singh's private retreat in Lancashire is a testament to his unique taste and ambitious renovation project. The TV doctor, known for his work on CBeebies' Get Well Soon and ITV's This Morning, found his dream home while filming an episode of BBC's Celebrity Escape to the Country in 2023. The former water tower, with its breathtaking views from Peel Tower to the Manchester skyline, was the perfect sanctuary for Ranj to unwind from his busy working life and host guests. However, the renovation process proved to be a challenging and costly endeavor, far exceeding his initial expectations.
Ranj's vision for the property was to create a sociable space, opening up the ground floor to encourage gatherings and entertainment. The result is a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere, with cream sofas, layered textures, and low lighting. The neutral color palette of creams, taupes, and greys flows throughout the house, creating a relaxed and hotel-like ambiance. The attention to detail is remarkable, from the bespoke steel doors and large mirror in the hallway to the layered wall murals along the staircase, which were initially met with skepticism by the electrician but now serve as a striking feature.
The master suite, spanning three levels, is a highlight of the renovation. Ranj's attention to detail is evident in the dressing room with its natural light, full-height wardrobes, and freestanding bath. The master bedroom features a chandelier made of hundreds of delicate glass droplets, which Ranj himself hung. He even went to great lengths to tone down the gold finish to match the rest of the scheme. The beds were specially made to fit up the stairs, and Ranj's connection to the bed factory from his youth adds a personal touch.
The rooftop terrace, with its incredible views and privacy, is the 'icing on the cake' of the retreat. Ranj has already made it a focal point for his neighbors, upgrading the shared intercom and installing a defibrillator. He has also become a regular visitor to nearby Ramsbottom, a 45-minute walk away, where he enjoys the local eateries and atmosphere. Despite the initial stress of the renovation, Ranj now feels relaxed and at home in his private retreat, having learned valuable lessons along the way.
The renovation has not only transformed the property but also improved its energy efficiency, raising the energy rating from E to B. Ranj's dedication to creating a lasting home is evident in his choice of materials and attention to detail. While he admits he would never undertake such a project again due to its stress, the rewards and lessons learned have been significant. Ranj's new children's book, Dr Ranj's Human Body Encyclopedia, is a testament to his dedication to education and entertainment.
