Families Urge More Study on VR's Impact on Children
A recent study reveals families' perspectives on virtual reality (VR) technologies, highlighting their desire for more research-based information on VR's potential effects on brain and behavioral development. Families prioritize physical activity features over educational content, emphasizing the importance of VR in promoting a healthy lifestyle. They also advocate for safety controls to detect bullying or harassment on VR platforms, moving beyond parental oversight. The study, conducted by Qiao Jin and colleagues, involved analyzing interview data from 67 children and 55 adult guardians, followed by a focus group of 84 children and 40 guardians. Key findings include a strong emphasis on understanding VR's impact on brain and behavior, recognizing their interconnected nature in various aspects of a child's life. Families express concerns about VR's addictive properties and seek evidence-based guidance for VR use.
The research highlights a complex view of responsibility, with families believing tech companies should prioritize children's well-being. They envision a governance model involving industry, research, and public institutions to ensure VR platforms are safe and beneficial. This study underscores the need for further research on VR's impact on children, with the potential to shape future VR development and usage guidelines.
